PD3 reading practice: accuracy and time management

A useful reading session ends with two results: a score and a clear explanation of why each lost point was lost. Start by separating finding the right passage from understanding it.

How much time is there?

PD3 reading gives you 25 minutes for the first section and 65 minutes for the remaining reading sections. Practise those blocks separately before doing a complete set. Do not borrow spare time from the second block to repair the first.

A practical plan for the first 25 minutes

  1. Minutes 0–2: scan the contents page and question headings. Identify the section each question belongs to.
  2. Minutes 2–19: search for each answer. First identify what is requested: a person, date, material, place or reason. If you cannot locate the evidence after roughly a minute, flag the question and continue.
  3. Minutes 19–23: return to flagged questions. Read the sentence before and after the possible answer.
  4. Minutes 23–25: check blanks, question numbers and answers that require two pieces of information.

This is a training starting point. Adjust it using your actual time and the questions you left unfinished.

Answer the question being asked

“Hvornår blev museet åbnet?” asks for the opening date. A date describing when the building was constructed is not enough. Underline the event as well as the question word. Write only the words needed to answer it.

For “Nævn begge”, check that your answer contains both requested items. Short answers can be precise without being full sentences. When reviewing, locate the exact words that support your answer rather than relying on a tick or a familiar keyword.

Paragraph gaps and connectors

For a missing paragraph, read on both sides of the gap. Check what pronouns such as “det”, “de” and “denne” refer to. Then check whether the inserted paragraph continues, contrasts with or explains the previous point. A paragraph can fit the topic but still break the argument.

For word gaps, name the relationship before choosing: result, contrast, addition or explanation. Then read the whole sentence again with your selected word. Vocabulary and grammar both matter.

Keep a short error log

For each wrong answer, record the question, the supporting sentence, your reason for choosing incorrectly and one rule for next time. Useful categories are wrong location, wrong answer type, missed contrast, vocabulary gap and running out of time. Practise the two largest categories before opening another full set.

Build this into a four-week study plan or compare the reading and writing task types.
